My favourite thing to do on Quay Fair Day in Penzance, is to visit Beerwolf Books’ stall. This year’s purchase came in the form of ‘My First Nursery Book’ with drawings by Franciszka Themerson.
Born in 1907, Themerson was a Polish avant-garde artist. Although primarily a painter, she was also an illustrator, film-maker (along with her husband Stefan Themerson) and stage designer. She illustrated some forty books for children.
‘My First Nursery Book’ is made up of four timeless children’s stories: ‘Who Killed Cock Robin?,” “The Gingerbread Man,” “Three Little Pigs” and “The Three Bears”. The illustrations were originally created in the 1940s but it is a style of illustration which has endured; they look as fresh today as the day they were drawn.
I’m very pleased with this year’s Beerwolf purchase. It will soon be moved to its new home on Little My’s heaving bookshelf, to be enjoyed by Mother and child for years to come.
